MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23 West Virginia women’s soccer team closes out the regular season with a pair of BIG EAST Conference matches this weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU takes on Connecticut in a match presented by EZToUse.com on Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m., and faces Providence on “Senior Day” in a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, Oct. 24.
The first 200 fans in attendance tomorrow night will receive a FREE gold t-shirt courtesy of EZToUse.com.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 3-0 shutout over visiting Georgetown last weekend. The win marked the program’s 200th victory as West Virginia has run off seven consecutive wins – the most since beginning the 2006 season at 7-0.
Connecticut is led by veteran coach Len Tsantiris, now in his 30th season. The Huskies are coming off a 3-1 victory over DePaul, the national division’s second place team.
“UConn is a talented team year in, year out,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “And this season is no different. They are playing very well at this time of the season and have some good results to show for it. They're just a tough team defensively to beat.”
The Huskies’ offense is paced by forwards Angelika Johansson (7G, 1A) and Jessica Shufelt (5G, 3A) who combine for 28 points on the season. Nine different players have scored a goal, and the team that has scored seven goals in its last three matches.
Connecticut’s back line lost All-America defender Brittany Taylor to graduation and has looked to junior Kacey Richards to the lead the UConn defense. They also return goalkeeper Jessica Dulski who has started all 17 matches, allowing 17 goals on the season.
Jim McGirr is in his sixth year at the helm of Providence soccer, guiding his team to a 9-5-2 (3-4-2) record. PC travels to Pitt tomorrow night before coming to Morgantown on Sunday.
“Jim has his team playing some very good soccer this season,” says Izzo-Brown. “They have a transfer who has been very impactful.
“We have our hands full this weekend. Both games will be a battle. There is a lot at stake for UConn, Providence and us.”
The Friars have allowed 18 goals this season, including only three in the first half, behind the efforts of two experienced goalkeepers. Senior Jill Schott has started nine matches and junior Caitlin Walker has started seven to combine for eight shutouts on the season.
Leading their attack are forwards Amanda Webster and Jill Camburn who have accounted for 12 of the team’s 24 goals scored. PC has scored at least one goal in all but two contests this season. Camburn, a fifth-year senior, has also dished out a team-best five assists.
The Mountaineers are 2-11-3 all-time against Connecticut and hold a 10-1-0 series edge on Providence.
Sunday marks the final regular season match for six seniors: Kerri Butler, Cassandra Deitrick, Kristen Felice, Ashtin Larkin, Sydney Metheny and Megan Mischler.
