Baseball: Blue Team Avoids Sweep

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – An eight run, two-inning performance keyed a victory for the Blue team, as it avoided the sweep in the West Virginia University Gold-Blue World Series with an 8-6 victory over the Gold team last night at Hawley Field.
After the Gold team took a quick lead on a Grant Buckner two-run home run in the first, Matt Malloy responded in the bottom of the inning with his own home run, scoring three and giving the Blue team the lead for good.
Jared Hill earned the win for the Blue team, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up four runs on four hits and walking three. Andy Podolinski came on in relief and worked five innings, giving up one run on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Jeremy Gum earned the save, pitching 0.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits and one walk.
Harrison Musgrave suffered the loss, as he pitched one inning and allowed eight runs on seven hits, with three walks. Zach Bargeron relieved Musgrave in the middle of the second, and in five innings, only allowed three hits and three strikeouts. Matt Morrone pitched the final two innings and gave up two walks and earned one strikeout.
The Blue team put the game out of reach in the second inning, keyed by a Justin McDavid two-run double. Mark Dvoroznak, Tyler Steele-Worsham and Malloy also hit second-inning doubles.
The Gold team chipped away at its deficit in the fourth inning, as a Chris Rasky double brought the score to 8-4.
Ryan McBroom and Cody Dolan’s RBI singles in the ninth brought the Gold team to within two runs, 8-6, but Rasky grounded out to second to end the game.
With only a few practices remaining in the Mountaineers’ fall season, Buckner leads the team with a .433 average. The Elkview, W.Va., native has a team-best 45 hits and 26 runs on 104 at bats.
McBroom has four home runs and the team’s second-best batting average (.431), while Colin Durborow and Wilson pace the team with 31 runs each.
Ryan Tezak owns a team-best 2.73 ERA, allowing 11 runs on 25 hits in 29.2 innings of work. Hill is tops on the team with 29 strikeouts.
