MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia University tennis team will travel to Norfolk, Va., on Oct. 21, to compete in the 2010 ITA Regional Championships hosted by Old Dominion.
Freshman Melis Tanik, sophomore Emily Mathis and juniors Kathryn Haught and Veronica Cardenas will represent the Mountaineers in the tournament in both singles and doubles competitions.
“We have an opportunity to play against some opponents that we don't typically see during the spring season,” says coach Tina Samara. “It is a good way to gage where we are level-wise and what we need to work on going into the spring season.”
Tanik was the only Mountaineer to automatically qualify for the main draw of the singles competition, while Mathis, Haught and Cardenas will enter the qualifying round to earn a spot in the singles competition.
In the doubles competition, Mathis and Tanik will reunit after competing together at the Queen City Classic, while Haught and Cardenas pair up for the first time this fall season.
“Hopefully we make progress everyday we are out there,” adds Samara. “However, based on past experience both as a player and a coach, I realize that seeing this progress can sometimes take more time than one would like. I am confident that if the girls keep working hard and come back ready after the holidays, we will have a good year.”
The tournament is set to start on Thursday with the doubles main draw and the singles qualifying round. The championships will conclude on Monday, Oct. 25, with the finals of both events.
