WASHINGTON, D.C. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped by Georgetown, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at North Kehoe Field in Washington, D.C.
In a game that had few scoring opportunities, Georgetown was able to take advantage of a WVU miscue for the game-winning goal. In the 30th minute, a cross was played to Georgetown’s Seth C’deBaca in the West Virginia box. WVU junior Ruben Garrido turned around to play the ball and had an accidental trip of C’deBaca that ultimately led to a penalty kick. Ian Christianson took the penalty kick and drilled it into the left side for his second goal of the season.
West Virginia’s best two chances came late in the game. Sophomore Shadow Sebele had a shot in the 75th minute that Georgetown keeper Matthew Brutto was able to corral. Junior Raymon Gaddis then had a chance with only minutes remaining when he nearly beat the keeper to a loose ball. Brutto was able to get just enough of it to disrupt the scoring chance.
The Hoyas out-shot the Mountaineers 14-7 and also held the corner kick advantage at 9-3.
Senior goalkeeper Zach Johnson finished the game with four saves.
West Virginia will travel to Elon on Wednesday, Oct. 6, for its final non-conference game. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
