On when multiple receivers are put in:
You get a chance to go out and play. They don’t know who to guard if we’re five wide.
On the importance of safety during play and the Eric LeGrand (Rutgers) situation:
I haven’t seen or read anything. Coach Stewart let us know about it yesterday and asked that we pray for the guy. That’s a pretty harsh thing. I think that all we can do is pray for him. It tells us that we have to be careful out there. They say to keep your head up at all times. We don’t have to be scared out there of getting hurt, but we have to play it safe.
I try not to think about it. If I’m out there thinking about it, then I won’t play to the best of my ability. That’s something we don’t need. I just go out and play how I’m supposed to play, keep my head up, and I should be good.

On learning from seniors Chris Neild and Scooter Berry:
When you have good players like that in front of you, you’ll always pick up what they’re doing and what they teach you. They teach you little techniques; everyone has their own game, but it’s always good to have seniors to teach you new things. You see what they do and how they take on blocks. That really helps me a lot. Every time I get a rep and head back to the sideline, there’s Neild or Berry, and they tell me what I did or how I can improve.
On the defense’s impressive national statistics:
The numbers will come. At the end of the day, we just have to go out there and play and do what we have to do. I think we’re closer than we were last year. As a team, everyone seems close.
On the improvement of the defensive line:
Last year we were playing with a few injuries. When Scooter was out, there were only a few of us, and then when Scooter got back, I got hurt. Knock on wood, the injuries are down this year, and we’re healthy. We also have a lot of new guys like Bruce Irvin who are helping us out.

On the increased number of passing plays and the overall play of the offensive line:
We’re used to it, because that’s our offense. We’ve been doing pretty well – we just have to find guys to protect and whatever they throw at us, we’re going to pick it up. We need to give Geno enough time to make the read and so far, it’s been going pretty well.
On Syracuse’s defensive line:
They’re really athletic. They bring a lot of different blitzes, which are pretty hard to pick up. We’ve got to be prepared to know what they’re going to bring. They have a lot of variations of zone blitzes from the left side and the right, so we have to be mentally sound. We’re ready to go.
Brandon Hogan
On the interceptions by Keith Tandy:
Everyone on the defense is saying he just had luck. We need his luck to roll off onto us. He’s in the right spot where the ball is and he’s making the plays.
About WVU’s defense:
Our defensive line is playing great and our linebackers have been doing a lot of stuff, as well. We’re forcing long third downs and making them have tough throws to complete. It makes it much easier for us (defensive backs) when they’re playing well.
On Syracuse’s offense:
They run a lot of slants. They try to set you up with different routes and put it all together nicely. They have fast receivers that can go downfield, and they take shots.
