Storrs, Conn. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team and No. 5 Connecticut will battle on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn., in a nationally-televised game broadcasted on SNY.
Last season in Morgantown, WVU battled the then-No. 13 UConn squad to a scoreless tie. In 2008, now senior Alex Silva tallied the game-winning goal in front of 4,407 fans to give WVU the upset victory at then-No. 7-ranked UConn, 1-0.
"UConn is arguably one the best teams in college soccer every year and this year is no different,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “They are well coached, they have many explosive players and they provide one of the best atmospheres in college soccer. This will be very difficult for us on the road against a team that is clearly a national championship contender."
The Mountaineers enter the contest coming off a 1-0 loss to No. 22 South Florida last Saturday. West Virginia owns a 7-4-2 overall mark, including a 3-2-0 record in the BIG EAST.
Offensively, WVU is led by sophomores Peabo Doue and Shadow Sebele. Doue has five goals and three assists, while Sebele owns three goals and five assists.
In between the posts, senior keeper Zach Johnson has started all 13 matches, playing 1,236 minutes in goal. He has allowed 11 goals, while making 37 saves with a 0.80 goals-against average.
Connecticut is riding a three-match unbeaten streak and owns a 9-1-3 overall mark, including a 3-0-2 record in the BIG EAST. In their last match, the Huskies tied at St. John’s, 0-0. Alan Ponce led the team with six shots, while Greg King had three shots. There were a total of 33 shots taken by both teams.
Offensively, Cascio leads the team with 22 points (9 g, 4 a). He has registered 39 shots, 20 on-goal. Carlos Alvarez has three goals and 12 assists, while Stephane Diop has six goals.
In between the posts, Josh Ford has started all 13 contests. He has allowed four goals and made 37 stops, for a .902 save percentage. Ford owns seven clean sheets this season.
The Huskies are under the guidance of Ray Reid, who is in his 14th season with the program and owns a 197-69-30 mark.
