MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Gold team’s hot bats and strong pitching were enough to defeat the Blue team, 14-5, this evening in the first game of the West Virginia University baseball team’s 21st annual Gold-Blue World Series at Hawley Field.
Junior right-handed pitcher Josh McCauley, a transfer from Frederick (Md.) Community College, earned the win, allowing four runs, three earned, in five innings of work. The Mercersburg, Pa., native also recorded a strikeout.
Junior left-handed pitcher Jonathan Jones suffered the loss, allowing 11 hits and seven runs in four innings on the mound. The Fredericksburg, Va., native’s line also included four strikeouts and three walks.
The Gold team ended the night 19-for-44 and was paced by the strong hitting of freshman Ryan McBroom. The Fredericksburg, Va., native went 5-for-6 at the plate, including three doubles and one home run, and added three RBIs.
Isac Franklin, also a freshman, went 3-for-4 for the Blue team, which ended the night at 9-for-33. The Pickerington, Ohio, native’s stat line also included one RBI.
The Gold team scored two runs in each of the first two innings, and the quick lead was too much for the Blue team to overcome.
Up 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning, McBroom padded the Gold team’s advantage, as he hit a solo homerun, his team-leading fourth of the fall season. Redshirt senior Grant Buckner followed McBroom at the plate with a double. The Elkview, W.Va., native would score after advancing on back-to-back wild pitches. Jones then walked freshman Matt Frazer, and he scored on classmate Cody Dolan’s double. Sophomore Chris Rasky was thrown out on the next play, and the Gold owned a 7-2 lead at the inning’s break.
The Blue team responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Franklin opened the stanza and hit a double to left field. After advancing on TJ Kuban’s sacrifice bunt, Franklin scored on a single from Dom Hayes. Mark Dvoroznak kept the momentum going and followed Hayes with a double. A Colin Durborow sacrifice fly scored Dvoroznak, and the inning ended with a Jeremy Gum fly out.
The Gold team responded in the top of the sixth inning and put the game out of reach, scoring five runs on four hits. Rasky punctuated the high-scoring inning with a three-run home run over the right field wall.
Though the Blue team would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning, they could not overcome the Gold team’s lead. The visitors would go on to add two more runs in the top of the ninth inning.
The series will resume tomorrow, with the first pitch of game two scheduled for 5 p.m.
