TAMPA, Fla. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team fell 1-0 in a hard-fought battle with No. 22 South Florida on Saturday evening at the USF Soccer Stadium.
Despite the loss, West Virginia (7-4-2) out-shot USF (8-3-2) 11-8, while holding the edge in corner kicks, 7-3.
USF’s Andre Mittoo was able to break the tie in the 66th minute after gathering the ball on the right side of the Mountaineers defensive zone. Mittoo split two West Virginia defenders and was able to put the ball just inside of the far post.
West Virginia had the majority of their chances in the first half starting with a header that went just wide in the ninth minute by junior Franck Tayou off of sophomore Shadow Sebele’s corner kick.
The Mountaineers also had an opportunity in the 32nd minute as junior Raymon Gaddis gathered the ball at midfield before passing to Sebele into the middle of the field. Sebele saw sophomore Travis Pittman streaking up the left side of the field and played the ball to Pittman who crossed it back to Sebele. Sebele was able to rip a shot that deflected off a USF defender and right into the hands of USF keeper Jeff Attinella.
Sophomore Uwem Etuk had another WVU chance in the 40th minute that went just right of the net from about 15 yards out.
USF had their best chances from Leston Paul in the 23rd minute and Shane Wixted in the 41st minute that both sailed wide right off of free kicks.
The Mountaineers will now travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on No. 5 Connecticut in BIG EAST action on Tuesday, Oct. 19. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcasted on SNY.
