Gymnastics Diary: Emily Kerwin

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Throughout the WVU gymnastics team’s 2011 fall preseason, the Mountaineers will take the time out of their busy schedules to share stories of practice and preparation with the fans.
This year’s fourth entry comes from senior Emily Kerwin. A two-event specialist on vault and bars, the Central, S.C., native returns after making an impact on the Mountaineers’ bars lineup in 2010. She enjoyed a career meet at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, as she paced the team and finished 15th overall with a 9.775 score. One of the team’s most-dependable motivational leaders, Kerwin was selected as a team co-captain for the 2011 campaign.
I can’t believe we are already half-way through the fall semester! Meet season is right around the corner, and the team is getting better every day.
It’s neat to see all the new skills that everyone is learning. Bethany Yurko is doing a double layout bars dismount and has improved so much since she has gotten here, while Amy Bieski has a full twisting double tuck off bars. Tina Maloney is working on a beautiful and powerful vault for this season as well. I could talk about all the awesome new things my teammates are doing all day, but the bottom line is great things are happening in WVU gymnastics right now!
This past weekend we had the 2011 recruits come and visit. It was so much fun getting to know the girls and showing them the ropes. We went to Fright Farm on Friday night and got to enjoy each other’s company outside of the gym. It is nice to take a break from the long hours and hard work at practice and to just hang out with my teammates. It also was really fun to see everyone react to things popping out at them and to jump, laugh and cry together while we went through the haunted house. All in all, the night and the whole weekend was a lot of fun.
This season is really shaping up to be a successful one. We are starting intra-squad meets soon, and we look good. Needless to say, I am proud to be a Mountaineer! I look forward to this season and to finally showing the results of all the hard work and preparation that we are putting forth now. I hope to see y’all there.
Let’s go Mountaineers!
