MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will open its season against Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 12:30 p.m. in the WVU Natatorium.
The men will be led by senior George Farquhar in the breast events, junior Taylor Camp in the fly events and sophomore Jared Goldthorpe in the back events. Junior Brad Eichenseer and freshman Tim Squires will lead the sprint free events. Farquhar and Goldthorpe were each BIG EAST champions last season, while Camp placed second in the 200 fly.
“As the men's team enters the season I think we not only have one of our strongest dual meet teams since I have been here, but our championship team should be very good at the end of the season,” coach Vic Riggs said. “With the addition of a very talented freshmen class both for swimming and diving, the team has the opportunity to compete very well.”
Transfers Lyn Ann Nelson and Caroline Larsson are the only seniors on the women’s team with Nelson leading the team in the free events. Sophomores Rachael Burnett and Mandie Nugent, both BIG EAST champions, will look for top performances in their respective events.
“After losing a talented class of seniors on the women's team, we are very young and have a big challenge ahead of us this season,” Riggs said. “Though the team may struggle in dual meets, our championship team has the opportunity to do as well as last year's team.”
Last season at Penn State, the men’s team was defeated 145-96, while the women’s team fell as well, 75-38.
