MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer resumes BIG EAST Conference play with a pair of home matches this weekend against Villanova and Georgetown. WVU takes on Villanova on Friday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. and faces Georgetown in a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, Oct. 17.
Tomorrow’s match is a “Dollar Night” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for purchase for just one dollar.
Sunday is Breast Cancer Awareness Day when the Mountaineers take on Georgetown at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Fans are encouraged to wear pink while the WVU coaching staff makes a check presentation to the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Fans will also be provided pink bracelets, breast cancer awareness magnets and educational material about breast cancer.
“It’s a very important weekend,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “These last four conference games will determine what type of postseason we have. On top of that, we have our breast cancer awareness game on Sunday, which has been a vital part of our program for several years.”
The Mountaineers are coming off a pair of overtime road wins behind senior Megan Mischler’s team-leading third and fourth game-winning goals this season. The Mountaineer defense has been excellent in the second half of the season, posting five shutouts in its last six matches.
The Wildcats are led by third-year coach John Byford. Villanova has lost four straight and is coming off a 3-2 double overtime loss at Cincinnati on Oct. 10.
“Villanova has two of the most lethal forwards in the conference in (Katie) Ryan and (Heidi) Sabatura,” says Izzo-Brown. “Those two have accounted for a ton of goals and we have to know where they are on the field at all times.
“Defensively, they have given up some goals so we are hoping our forwards will create some scoring opportunities. Our matches will Villanova in the past have always been close and Friday should be another good game.”
The Nova offense is paced by all-BIG EAST forward Ryan (8G, 5 A) and midfielder Sabatura (7G, 7A), each with 21 points on the season. The duo has combined to score 15 of Villanova’s 19 goals this season.
Villanova has a new defensive lineup this season, including rookie goalkeeper Jami Kranich who has allowed 23 goals in 14 matches. The VU defense did post a 1-0 shutout victory against Rutgers on Sept. 26.
Dave Nolan is in his seventh year at the helm of Georgetown soccer, guiding his team to an 11-4-0 (5-2-0) record. GU travels to Pitt tomorrow night before coming to Morgantown on Sunday.
“This is as talented of a team that Dave has fielded at Georgetown,” says Izzo-Brown. “They have some special players who have helped make them a Top 25 team this season. We are going to need a solid game from every player to battle Georgetown on Sunday.”
The Hoyas are the 14th highest ranked scoring offense in the nation and lead the BIG EAST in goals scored with 39. Leading their attack is preseason All-America midfielder Ingrid Wells with her seven goals and 10 assists. She ranks second in the nation in assists per game with her 0.71 average. Forward Camille Trujillo has also scored a team-best 10 goals on 43 shots.
GU has allowed only 11 goals through 15 matches this season behind the strong play of goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin who has recorded five shutouts. Although, the Hoyas have allowed one goal in each of the past four matches.
The Mountaineers, who sit in second place in the BIG EAST American Division standings, are 8-4-5 all-time against Villanova and hold an 11-3-0 series edge against Georgetown.
