Men's Soccer: WVU Set to Host Pitt

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team will host Pitt in BIG EAST action on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and has been designated as a “Dollar Night” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for purchase for just one dollar.
The Mountaineers are coming into the match after defeating No. 22 Notre Dame last Saturday evening. Shadow Sebele and Franck Tayou each scored goals in the 2-1 victory.
“I am pleased that we are winning games and scoring goals,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We can be better and we are going to get better and will not stop until we are the best.”
West Virginia (6-3-2, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) is currently tied for second place in the BIG EAST Blue Division standings with six points and trailing Connecticut by one point.
Offensively, the Mountaineers have out-shot their opponents, 152-110, while also scoring eight more goals than the opposition.
Senior goalkeeper Zach Johnson has started all 11 games with a goals-against average of 0.85 and three shutouts.
Pitt (5-4-2, 0-1-2 BIG EAST) enters the match seventh in the BIG EAST Blue Division standings with two points. The Panthers most recently tied Marquette, 2-2, after scoring two early goals in the first half, before allowing two goals to Marquette in the second half.
“Pitt has a good team and when they come in here it is a little different because the field is so much bigger than what they are use to,” LeBlanc added. “That being said, whenever it is a rivalry game you throw records out the window with every sport. Records speak nothing when it comes to Pitt-West Virginia.”
Pitt is led by Sam Luffy and Alex Betancourt who each have three goals and one assist, while Alex Grayson, Terry Akpua and Andy Kalas all have two assists apiece.
Hami Kara has been the Pitt goalkeeper this season and has played in 10 games with a goals-against average of 1.06 and has made 30 saves.
Pitt is coach by Joe Luxbacher, who is in his 27th season as the Pitt head coach.
This will be the 46th meeting between the two schools with West Virginia holding a 31-9-5 edge. Last season, the teams battled to a scoreless draw in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Free WVU student shuttle bus service will be available from the Mountainlair and the Brooke/Braxton Towers loop starting at 5:30 p.m. up until the game’s start time. Return service to the Mountainlair and the Brooke/Braxton Towers will also be available at the conclusion of the game.
