Football: Coach Bill Stewart Quotes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU football coach Bill Stewart’s quotes from Tuesday’s press conference.
Opening Statement
Hopefully this weather stays nice so we can have a sellout game on Thursday. There is no reason we shouldn’t see a sellout, and hopefully we will have a great Gold Rush.
I don’t have a whole lot to say about our last game with UNLV. We came out of it pretty much injury free, and we are happy about that.
We now move on to what we think is the most important part of our schedule, and that is BIG EAST play. It is round one, as we like to call it. Before you get the ball rolling, you have to get started.
This is a USF team that I am sure will come up here loaded. We have not done well with them in the past. All-time, we are 2-3, and if I am not mistaken, they have won three of the last four games.
In 2006, we scored 19 (points). In 2007, we scored 17 points. Both of those games were losses. Then, in 2008, they came here for Patrick White’s “White Out” and we won 13-7. Last year, we went down there ranked and scored 19 points and lost. We have been lucky to win one game.
We have had good preparation this week. It has been fast, and we have been working around the clock. We need to play a football game.
On USF quarterback B.J. Daniels
I hope we do not have the same plan for (B.J. Daniels) as we did last year, because he ran for over 100 yards, threw for over 230 yards and had three touchdown passes. Whatever we did last year, we better not repeat this year.
I don’t know if anyone can have a plan to stop B.J. Daniels - you just have to try to contain him as best you can because they also have a lot of offensive weapons.
He can still take the ball and go. They are building an offense that is going to be fun for the USF Bulls fans to come. I just hope it isn’t fun for them on Thursday. They have so much talent. They match up with us.
On Willie Milhouse playing the role of Daniels in practice
Willie (Milhouse) has done a nice job for the scout team, and he has given our defense fits. He is probably the closet thing we have on our team to a B.J. Daniels. I worry about B.J. Daniels, I worry about their wideouts and I worry about their running backs. They are doing a great job. Our hands are full and we have our work cut out for us.
On USF’s defense
They are very, very salty. They run, they match up and they have big, fast guys.
On making the transition as a new coach
Every coach, particularly a winner like Skip Holtz, has a plan. Maybe a lot of people disagree with the plan, but you have to have a plan.
Sooner or later, Patrick White was going to graduate. Owen Schmitt graduated, and Darius Reynaud and Steve Slaton went to the NFL. I had to have a really good plan. There were eight defensive starters gone when I came in.
Once you get a plan, you install it and then you follow it the best you can. You have to have faith in your plan.
On the BIG EAST Conference
The BIG EAST is a black and blue league and I say that because of physicality. This is a physical football league, and we hammer people. We have a .700 winning percentage record in the last five years in outside competition.
We like to hit each other. That 13-7 game in 2008 was a very physical game. Last year, they scored more points than we did and we just couldn’t contain them.
(Thursday) is going to be that type of game. If it is going to be a defensive struggle, then so be it.
On Mark Snyder reading Geno Smith
I worry about Mark Snyder, and again there is another friend of mine that I think is a tremendous football coach.
On Thursday night games
Sometimes you need to talk to you players and tell them just to play the game. They don’t have to put capes on and fly around. We need to go play Mountaineer football, and if we do that, our young men will come out with a good advantage.
This is very big for recruiting in the state of Florida. We are going to have a lot of households watching, and there will be a lot of recruits watching because they don’t play until Friday.
On injuries
Josh Jenkins will play. I have watched him closely the last two nights. Nothing flared up, and he is good to go. I don’t know if he is 100 percent, but he is in route to that.
Brandon Hogan just had a slight pull in his arm, and he is fine. He is tough. I don’t know if there is anyone as tough in our program. Stedman Bailey had a rib shot and some soreness. He could have played but we were up 35-0 so I left him out. Both of them are fine.
