On the similarities between Skip Holtz’s ECU and USF teams:
The defense is a little different than what East Carolina use to do. Mark Snyder is a little different. I cannot speak on what the offense does, but obviously Skip gave us some problems two years ago when we went down there (East Carolina). They (USF) have some really good players, so we are going to have to be on our game regardless of who the coach is.
On why the games are usually close and low scoring:
Everything is about matchups and when people say, ‘Well, this team beat that team so that means this team is going to beat that team,’ that’s not the way things work because different teams matchup (differently). They have different strengths. They match up pretty well. Their speed and some of the things they do have given us some problems in the past. I think a lot of that is matchup related, and that is why all of the games are exciting and why most of them are low scoring.
On whether always playing USF on week days, instead of Saturdays, effects outcome:
That might have something to do with it. More of it probably has to do with those big ends that come off the edge and some of those guys on the defense. I think they had five guys get drafted last year off their defense.
Brodrick Jenkins
On how to stay on assignments with a rushing quarterback:
Repetition. You have to keep doing it throughout the week. Coach (David) Lockwood is focused, and he is stressing that a lot - keep your eyes right, stay focused and do not half-speed during practice.
On being from Florida and familiarity with USF players:
I know most of them. I encountered them when I was in high school. I probably have played against a lot of them, and I just do not remember. Being from Florida, (this game) is bragging rights.
Bruce Irvin
On preparing for (quarterback) B.J. Daniels:
To be honest, I think we play better against scrambling quarterbacks because in the past we have gotten a lot of sacks against so called scrambling quarterbacks. It is just the same thing, preparing and watching a lot of film, and obviously we have to watch much more film because it is a shorter week. We are just preparing the same, just a little bit harder this week.
On what he has seen from Daniels and whether he remembers the game last year:
I actually watched that game; he did have a good game. We just have to keep containment and get good pressure.
On playing against Daniels:
You have to play your assignments. You have to play assignment football and you cannot do your own thing. When you are supposed to stay outside, you have to stay outside. With a guy like B.J. Daniels, one mistake and he can make you pay for it.
