MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team complete day one of the Queen City Classic today, in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a good showing in the singles and doubles competitions.
“Overall, we competed well. We made some adjustments on certain courts and if we continue to work on these things, I think it will improve our success in the spring season,” says coach Tina Samara. “We have some players returning from injuries and this is a great time for them to get in a lot of matches.”
Both pairs representing WVU in the doubles competition will be competing in the quarter-finals tomorrow. The flight ‘A’ pair of freshman Melis Tanik and sophomore Emily Mathis shut out their opponent with an 8-0 victory, while junior Ashley Pilsbury and sophomore Liv Pettersson defeated UC’s Carly Wilson and Elise Woulfe, 9-7, in flight ‘B’.
Tanik, Pilsbury and junior Veronica Cardenas led the Mountaineers in singles action by making it to the semi-final rounds in their respective flights. After receiving a first-round bye, each of the competitors won their matches in the quarter-finals.
Pettersson, junior Catie Wickline and freshman Anna Rodionova also contributed in the flight ‘C’ and ‘D’ competition. Wickline and Rodionova each picked up a win for the Mountaineers, but fell short in the flight ‘D’ quarter-finals.
“We are ultimately trying to focus on what we can do to improve,” Samara concludes. “We are just using this fall season to prepare ourselves for the dual matches in the spring.”
