Swimming: WVU Splits in Double Duals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams posted solid finishes on Saturday at the WVU Natatorium, as the men and women defeated Duquesne, 138-126 and 156-103, respectively. Both teams however, fell to ACC foe Virginia Tech, as the men dropped a 165-130 decision and the women fell, 156-138.
The Mountaineers captured a total of nine first-place finishes and earned 11 second-place finishes in the effort.
On the final home meet of their careers, seniors Kayla Andrews and Morgan Callaway each recorded wins. Andrews took home the 50 free (23.31) and 100 free (50.45), while Callaway won the 100 back (56.94). Callaway also took second (2:04.19) in the 200 back, while redshirt freshman Sara Conner finished in third (2:05.90).
Freshman Rachael Burnett also continued her success by taking first place (4:22.72) in the 400 IM and second in both the 500 free (4:52.36) and the 200 free (1:49.78).
Freshman Robyn Matthews had success in the breaststroke events by finishing first in the 200 breast (2:22.34) and second in the 100 breast (1:05.84). WVU also got points from Mandie Nugent who scored second (2:05.66) in the 200 fly.
Senior Ashley Malik scored third place for the Mountaineers on the 1-meter board (264.22) as well.
To end the women’s meet, Andrews, Callaway and seniors Shaunna Purtell and Stephanie Shupe scored second place in the 200 free relay (1:35.19) to finish off their home careers.
For the men, freshman Jared Goldthorpe provided two key victories with first-place finishes in the 200 back (1:51.00) and 500 free (4:33.46), while also placing second in the 100 back (51.13). Fellow freshman Hugh Simmonds fought for a second-place finish behind Goldthorpe in the 500 free (4:36.73) for West Virginia.
Sophomore Taylor Camp and Simmonds also finished second (1:41.59) and third (1:41.64), respectively, in the 200 free.
Junior George Farquhar continued his success with a win in the 200 breast (2:06.71) and a second-place finish in the 100 breast (57.65).
Sophomore Brad Eichenseer grabbed a win for West Virginia with a first-place finish in the 50 free (21.01), while narrowly missing first in the 100 free and settling for second place (46.47).
Senior Brandon Robinson and sophomore Matt O’Neill led the diving once again with O’Neill placing third on both the 1-meter (296.47) and 3-meter (319.95) boards. Robinson placed fourth on 1-meter (285.90) and fifth on 3-meter (284.92).
The 200 free relay team of Camp, Goldthorpe, Simmonds and Eichenseer ended the meet for the Mountaineers with a third-place finish (1:24.92).
West Virginia will now train for the BIG EAST Championships with diving taking place Feb. 12-14 and the swimming portion from Feb. 17-20 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
