MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Chris Enourato has been selected to the initial watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, the association announced today.
The all-time saves leader at WVU is one of just 40 relief pitchers named to the prestigious list. The initial list will be updated with a mid-season release the week of April 19, including the national saves leaders. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released on June 2 prior to the start of NCAA regional tournament competition.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced on the opening day of the College World Series on June 19.
Enourato, who was named to the NCBWA mid-season watch list for the award in 2009, is coming off his most productive year on the mound. The senior went 6-2 with a 3.66 ERA, six saves and 58 strikeouts in 46.2 innings pitched last season. In 20 appearances, Enourato harnessed his control well during his junior season by throwing just one wild pitch.
The right-hander is one of two pitchers from the Big East to make the watch list, joining Louisville’s Gabriel Shaw. Enourato has a career record of 13-4 with a 3.99 ERA, 17 saves and 112 strikeouts in 106 innings pitched. Enourato is tied for seventh all-time in appearances with 57.
