MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU tennis team completed its seventh annual Martha Thorn Invitational today at the Ridgeview Racquet Club, claiming three titles and two runners-up.
The Mountaineers’ doubles team of redshirt junior Monique Burton and senior Stephanie LaFortune started the day off with an 8-2 win in the championship match over Duquesne.
“I am very pleased with the girls who did well,” says head coach Marc Walters, “because those areas were the question marks on our team going into the weekend.”
Burton also won the flight ‘A’ singles championship, taking the title over freshman teammate Emily Mathis in a 6-1, 6-2 match.
Other strong showings for the Mountaineers included flight ‘C’ singles player sophomore Veronica Cardenas, who defeated Duquesne’s Megan O’Sullivan in a 4-6, 6-0 (11-9) match. Junior Ashley Pilsbury’s 7-5, 6-2 win over Youngstown State’s Gretchen Cloern in the semifinals was another high point for the Mountaineers.
Cardenas and Pilsbury will square off in the finals Wednesday, Sept. 9, leaving a WVU player in both the winning and runner-up spots in flight ‘B’.
“The ‘B’ and ‘C’ flight girls played hard, but made too many errors to really get their games going,” says Walters. “This is something we need to improve on over the next two weeks so that we can win even more titles down the road.”
The Mountaineers have next weekend off and will return to action Sept. 18, at the Stony Brook Classic, in Stony Brook, NY.
