MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Syracuse in its first BIG EAST match of the season this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
The Orange (11-4, 1-1) defeated the Mountaineers (10-6, 0-1) in a 0-3 (25-19, 25-24, 25-20) match.
The Mountaineers stuck with the Orange in set one, after a service ace from sophomore outside hitter Kylie Armbruster tied the game at four. Syracuse then regained the lead as Hayley Todd took charge at the net to give the Orange an 11-15 advantage. Refusing to give up, WVU bounced back to within one after a kill from senior outside hitter Abby Raines. Todd then answered with a kill of her own as Syracuse went on to take set one.
The Orange carried the momentum in the second set, as they dominated with 13 kills and four team blocks.
Syracuse once again gained an early lead in the third set, after Sarah Morton posted several tough kills. Down 10-17, a kill from Armbruster then sent the Mountaineers on a 5-0 run to bring the set to within two. Despite their best efforts, Syracuse continued to dominate as they took the set 25-20 to end the match.
Leading the Mountaineers was Raines who posted her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Kari Post also had a good match with 28 assists and 12 digs.
WVU will return to play tomorrow with a 1 p.m. match against Marquette at the WVU Coliseum.
