Women's Soccer: WVU Heads To USF

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team resumes BIG EAST Conference play with a trip to Tampa, Fla., to battle the USF Bulls on Sunday, Sept. 27. Kickoff at USF Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers, 4-2-4 on the season, are fresh off a 1-0 home win against Marquette. Freshman Caroline Szwed scored her first collegiate goal on a header from six-yards out in the 88th minute.
Eight different Mountaineers have scored a goal this season, led by forwards Megan Mischler and Bry McCarthy with two apiece. Mischler and Szwed lead the team in assists with two each.
Defensively, West Virginia has posted five shutouts in 2009, including two straight against Tennessee and Marquette. Goalkeeper Kerri Butler holds a 0.47 goals-against average in over 961 minutes of action between the posts.
The Bulls are led by third-year coach Denise Schilte-Brown, who has guided her teams to 14 wins in two and a half seasons in Tampa. USF sports a 3-4-2 record this season following a scoreless draw at Pitt on Sept 24. The Bulls have posted wins over Florida Atlantic, Austin Peay and Stetson.
Offensively, USF looks to sophomore forward Noelle Pineiro with her five goals on the season, the most by a Bulls player since Lindsay Brauer scored nine in 2006. Ten different USF players have a scored a goal this year.
Senior Mallori Lofton-Malachi leads the USF defense with her athletic, play-making ability in goal. A three-year starter, Lofton-Malachi had made 50 stops and recorded three shutouts in over 821 minutes of action this year.
The Mountaineers are a perfect 4-0 all-time against USF. WVU is 2-0 at home and on the road, including a 2-0 victory last season in Tampa. The Bulls were part of the BIG EAST Conference expansion in 2005.
Sunday’s match, the third televised contest of the season for WVU, will be shown locally on the Bright House Sports Network.
