MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been tabbed as the No. 4 prospect in the talent-rich Cape Cod Baseball League, announced today by Baseball America.
The junior from Morgantown, W.Va., led the Brewster Whitecaps in nearly every offensive category this summer despite missing the team’s first five games due to USA Baseball tryouts. Gyorko batted .323 with five home runs, 18 RBIs, six doubles and 18 runs scored in 34 games played.
The versatile infielder started several games at both second and third base for Brewster, while playing all 55 games at shortstop for WVU during his sophomore campaign. In 2009, Gyorko batted .421 with eight home runs, 58 RBIs, a school-record 28 doubles, 96 hits and a .658 slugging percentage to lead the Mountaineers to a 37-18 overall record.
As a freshman, Gyorko garnered Pro Line Athletic/NCBWA second team All-America honors. He added several more accolades following the 2009 season, being named a Brooks Wallace Award Finalist, the NCBWA District II Player of the Year, earning second team Louisville Slugger All-America honors and being selected as a Pro Line Athletic/NCBWA Third Team All-American.
BA ranked the top 30 prospects for the Cape Cod League, and the top 10 prospects in 17 other summer college leagues. In addition, the top 20 Team USA prospects were also ranked.
