MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Mountaineers finished their first day of the Stony Brook Classic with several wins in the doubles competition.
Throughout the day, the Mountaineers competed against Stony Brook, Northwestern, Houston and Fairleigh Dickinson.
“We had some good wins but it wasn’t a great day for us,” says head coach Marc Walters. “We tried a lot of different doubles combinations without much continuity, so we look forward to the formation of solid doubles teams as we get further into the season.”
Senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton were defeated in several close matches, but had an outstanding 8-4 win over Houston’s undefeated Bryony Hunter and Elena Kazakova. Freshman Emily Mathis and sophomore Veronica Cardenas also defeated Houston 8-4.
Junior Ashley Pilsbury and freshman Liv Pettersson defeated Stony Brook’s Salome Mkervalidze and Fanny Charliquart, 8-6 in their first match, but lost 8-4 to Houston in their second match.
Doubles teams Ashley Pilsbury and senior Gabriela Blaskovicova, along with sophomores Catie Wickline and Kathryn Haught finished the day with two more wins over FDU, both teams winining their matches 8-2.
WVU will continue play Saturday, Sept. 19, with the singles competition.
