Tennis: Mountaineers Head to Stony Brook

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will head to Stony Brook, N.Y., on Sept. 18-20, for the Stony Brook Classic.
Throughout the weekend the Mountaineers are scheduled to compete against Stony Brook, Long Island, Northwest State, Fairleigh Dickinson, and the University of Houston. Also competing will be Marist, Army and Navy.
The competition will start on Friday at 1 p.m. with doubles play and will continue through Saturday with the singles competition.
The Mountaineers last competed in the WVU Martha Thorn Invitational where they won three titles and two runner-up spots.
Junior Monique Burton captured two of the three titles won by WVU. Burton won 6-1, 6-2, in the flight ‘A’ singles over freshman teammate Emily Mathis. She also won 8-2 over Duquesne in the flight ‘A’ doubles with senior Stephanie LaFortune as her partner.
Junior Ashley Pilsbury won the flight ‘C’ title in a 6-1, 6-2, win over sophomore teammate Veronica Cardenas.
