MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team is set to host the WVU Invitational this weekend, starting on Friday, Sept. 18, with a 7 p.m. match against Wright State.
The Mountaineers will also compete on Saturday, Sept. 19, with matches against Princeton at 2 p.m. and Duquesne at 7:30 p.m. Tournament play ends on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2:30 p.m. as the Mountaineers face George Mason.
WVU is 7-3 this season after a 2-1 showing last weekend at the Akron Invitational. The Mountaineers posted wins over Bucknell (3-0) and Akron (3-2), before falling to TCU (0-3). Junior Lauren Evans was named to the all-tournament team for the second-straight weekend, as she posted 22 kills and a .288 hitting percentage, while also landing seven service aces and 11 blocks.
Wright State (7-3) heads into the weekend after a 3-1 loss to Cleveland State, in its first Horizon League match of the season. Senior Lexi Leonhard led the Raiders with 11 kills, while junior Shaunda Sandifer added eight kills and seven total blocks. Sandifer leads the Raiders with 128 kills and a .405 hitting percentage on the season. Wright State currently owns a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series record, after a 3-0 victory over the Mountaineers in 2006.
Princeton is 1-6 on the season, after dropping two matches to Villanova (3-2) and UMBC (3-0) last weekend. Senior Sheena Donohue was named to the Ivy League Honor Roll for her efforts in posting 96 kills and 114 digs on the weekend, including 29 digs in the loss to Villanova. The Tigers also own an advantage in the all-time series (4-6) with the Mountaineers after a 3-0 defeat in their last meeting in 1999.
Duquesne has a 7-4 record this season after dropping two matches at the UIC Invitational, falling to UIC (3-1) and Georgia State (3-0). Sophomore Liz Horman was named to the all-tournament team, as she led the Dukes with 24 kills and .360 hitting percentage. Last season, Duquesne defeated WVU 3-2. However, the Mountaineers still lead the all-time series 27-15.
George Mason improved its record to 9-3, with wins over N.C. State (3-1) and DePaul (3-2) last weekend at the N.C. State Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott Classic. For her efforts during the tournament, sophomore Noelle Fanella was named to the all-tournament team, as she posted 28 kills in the two matches. The Mountaineers are looking to tie the all-time series record after a 3-0 loss to the Patriots in 2001 moved the record to 3-4.
