AKRON, Ohio – The West Virginia University volleyball team split 1-1 today, with a win over Akron and a loss to TCU, in the last day of the Akron Invitational.
“It was a good tournament for us. We got some good experience in,” coach Veronica Hammersmith says. “The match against Akron was good because we played hard. Then with TCU, we just faced a team that had more fire-power than us and we learned some important lessons.”
In their first match of the day, the Mountaineers (7-3) posted an exciting 3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25 -21,15-13) win over tournament host Akron (7-3).
The Mountaineers dropped sets one and three, but rebounded in sets four and five, as they posted a team 55 kills, 70 digs and 10 service aces.
Sophomore Kylie Armbruster led with 13 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Whitney Lee made her debut with nine kills including one to end the match. Junior Bonnie West also had a good match, with a season-high 22 digs, while sophomore Kari Post recorded 46 assists.
In their second match of the day, the Mountaineers battled against TCU. Despite their best efforts in posting a team 30 kills and 29 digs, the Horned Frogs (7-3) defeated the Mountaineers in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 9-25) match.
Armbruster once again led with eight kills and eight digs, while Bonnie West recorded seven digs and five service aces.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum on Sept. 18-20, for the WVU Invitational. First match is set for Friday, Sept. 18, when the Mountaineers face Wright State at 7 p.m.
