Mountaineers Down Bucknell in Three
AKRON, Ohio (September 11, 2009) – The West Virginia University volleyball team posted its first win of the Akron invitational this afternoon, as it defeated Bucknell.
WVU improved to 6-2 with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) victory over the Bison (3-4).
The Mountaineers started the match with a 7-0 run to gain a commanding lead over the Bison in set one. Up 21-15, a service ace from senior Tamara De Angelis, followed by back-to-back kills from sophomores Michelle Kopecky and Kylie Armbruster put the Mountaineers in position to take the set. Junior Abby Norman, who posted three kills with a .750 hitting percentage in the first set, then landed another to give the Mountaineers a 24-18 advantage. WVU took set one after a Bucknell service error.
Bucknell started the second set with a 1-0 lead after a WVU service error. The Mountaineers then fought back with a kill from junior Lauren Evans to tie the set at two. With the set tied at eight, a joint block from Evans and sophomore setter Kari Post, followed by three-straight service aces from junior Bonnie West, sent the Mountaineers on a 5-0 run. After regaining the momentum, WVU never looked back as they posted nine kills and two team blocks to take the second set.
The Bison jumped to a 2-0 lead early in the third set, until another kill from Evans gave the Mountaineers a 6-0 run. Refusing let down, the two teams battled to 15-15 tie. Kopecky and Evans then posted a block, while Armbruster follow with her first service ace of the match to give the Mountaineers a 7-0 run. WVU took the match after back-to-back kills from senior Kristina Gallahan and junior Andrea Miller.
Leading the Mountaineers was Evans who posted eight kills with a .438 hitting percentage, while Post recorded 19 assists and five service aces.
As a team the Mountaineers posted 31 kills, 12 service aces
The Mountaineers are set to continue play at the Akron Invitational tomorrow with an 11 a.m. match against Akron and a 4 p.m. match against TCU.
