MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team received its first ranking of the 2009 season Tuesday. The Mountaineers were tabbed No. 14 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll.
Four WVU opponents are ranked in the NSCAA poll: Notre Dame (No. 3), Virginia (No. 9), Penn State (No. 12) and BYU (No. 25). Today’s poll is the first of 12 rankings throughout the season by the NSCAA.
West Virginia will play one exhibition match, playing host to Maryland on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers open the 2009 campaign at home against Ohio State on Sunday, Aug. 23.
The Mountaineers return five starters this season and were recently chosen to win the league division title, garnering 13 of the 15 first-place votes in voting done by the league’s 16 head coaches. Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown begins her 14th season in charge of the Mountaineers and has led her teams to nine straight NCAA tournament appearances.
