Baseball: Gyorko Named Cape Cod All-Star

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been named a 2009 Under Armour Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star.
The Mountaineer standout is one of 42 players from the prestigious league to be selected to the Under Armour Cape Cod League All-Star Game on Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m. in Boston’s Fenway Park. The Morgantown, W.Va., native will compete for the East All-Stars as the starting third baseman.
Despite playing just 16 games following USA Baseball tryouts, Gyorko leads the Brewster Whitecaps with 12 RBIs and a .557 slugging percentage. The Brooks Wallace Award finalist is batting a team-leading .344 with three home runs, four doubles and 11 runs scored.
Gyorko has started 10 games at third base entering tonight’s contest against the Y-D Red Sox, and has started six games at second base. The rising junior started all 55 games at shortstop for WVU in 2009, setting a single-season school record with 28 doubles while batting .421 with eight home runs and 58 RBIs.
As part of the all-star game festivities, Gyorko will also compete in the Cape Cod League’s home run hitting contest slated to begin next Thursday at 5:15 p.m. Joining Gyorko will be Connor Powers (Mississippi State), Harold Martinez (University of Miami), Hunter Morris (Auburn), Brett Eibner (Arkansas) and Kevin Patterson (Auburn).
The New England Sports Network (NESN) will provide a live telecast of the game, while NPR affiliate WCAI (90.1 fm) will provide radio coverage.
