Track: Grandt Named Region Athlete of the Year

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University track and field athlete Clara Grandt has been named the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year, announced today.
Grandt is currently ranked third in the 10,000-meter and 11th in the 5,000-meter event by the USTFCCCA and has qualified to compete in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter events at the upcoming NCAA Championships.
The West Union, W.Va., native placed sixth in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA East Regional Championships with a time of 16:14.60 and finished fifth with a time of 9:34.27 at the ECAC Championships in the 3,000-meter race to help lead WVU to in third place with 47.25 points; the team’s finish is tied for a program-best, joining the 2005 squad.
The redshirt-junior also won 5,000-meter title at BIG EAST Outdoor Championship with a time of 16:07.55. Grandt’s time was the second-best in school history, and helped WVU to a 7th-place finish with 50 total points. Grandt also set a new school record in the 10,000-meter event at the Stanford Outdoor Track and Field Championship on March 28th with a time of 33:16.96.
