MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Jessica O’Connell and Katelyn Williams of the West Virginia University track and field team wrapped up competition today at the 2009 Canadian Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Toronto.
O’Connell took tenth place in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:26.73 after qualifying for the final yesterday by placing sixth with a time of 4:23.50.
“This was her first senior championship and she ran very well,” commented Coach Sean Cleary.” “She qualified for the final and that means a lot.”
Throughout inclement weather, Williams was able to clear 1.70-meters to tie for fourth in the high jump. The sophomore’s performance is a personal-best while competing in the rain.
“I was very happy with her performance,” said Cleary. “She jumped her personal best in less than ideal weather, and that is a big deal.”
Marie-Louise Asselin finished fifth in the 5,000-meter event on Thursday.
With the conclusion of today’s competition, the season is now complete for all WVU track and field student-athletes.
“I’m proud of both of them, and Marie-Louise, on their performances,” added Cleary. “They will have a bit of a break now before they begin training again.”
