MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two members of the West Virginia University track and field team completed their season tonight at both the 2009 Canadian and USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Junior Marie-Louise Asselin finished fifth in the 5,000-meter event at the Canadian Championships in Toronto with a time of 16:15.04.
Teammate Clara Grandt raced in the 10,000-meter event and placed 20th at the USA Championships held in Eugene, Ore. The West Union, W.Va., native finished in 34:13.76
“Clara capped off a great year with a respectable run against the nation’s best professional runners,” commented Coach Cleary. “Marie-Louise also ran a fine race and both will now take a well-deserved break. These experiences will serve them both well as they prepare to help lead the cross country team in the fall.”
Jessica O’Connell and Katelyn Williams will also compete at the Canadian Championships in the 1,500-meter race and high jump, respectively. The semi-final 1,500-meter race is set for Saturday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m., while the high jump is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, at 11:30 a.m.
A combination of time and place finished will qualify the athlete’s competing in the Canadian Championships for the World Championships in Berlin, Germany to be held later this summer.
