Baseball: Van Zant Announces Team MVPs

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University baseball coach Greg Van Zant has announced the team MVPs for the 2009 season.
Shortstop Jedd Gyorko has been selected as the position player MVP after batting .421 with eight home runs, 58 RBIs, 28 doubles, 96 hits and 74 runs scored. The Morgantown native has been selected as a Brooks Wallace Award finalist, invited to try out for the USA Baseball National Team and has garnered several season-ending accolades to cap his second season.
Right-hander Jarryd Summers has been chosen as the pitching MVP, compiling a 7-3 record with a 3.06 ERA. The Sharpsville, Pa., native held the opposition to a .239 average while striking out 99 batters in 94 innings pitched, and also recorded two complete games in 2009.
Freshman MVP honors went to left-hander Jonathan Jones. The Fredericksburg, Va., native finished 6-2 with 54 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. Jones made 15 appearances and started 12 games in his first season at WVU, recording a complete game victory over Morehead State on April 28.
