Baseball: Gyorko Named NCBWA All-American

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been named to the 2009 Pro-Line Athletic/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America third team, announced today by the NCBWA.

The Morgantown native earns a spot on the prestigious All-America team for the second straight season, being named to the 2008 Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA All-America second team.
Among the 57 standouts on the three units, there are student-athletes from 19 different conferences and 17 conference championships teams. The three All-America squads are also made up of 18 conference player of the year winners.
Gyorko finished his sophomore campaign with a .421 batting average, eight home runs, 58 RBIs and a school-record 28 doubles. He added a team-best 96 hits and 74 runs scored.
The repeat Pro-Line/NCBWA All-American has garnered several year-end accolades after enjoying of the best individual seasons in WVU history. Gyorko is one of five finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, which will be announced on June 13 in Omaha, Neb.
Gyorko was also named a second team Louisville Slugger All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, and was selected as the 2009 NCBWA Division II Player of the Year. The former University High product is scheduled to participate at the USA Baseball National Team Trials on June 14-24 in Cary, N.C.
The all-BIG EAST first team selection is one of three conference players to make a Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA All-America team. Designated hitter Phil Wunderlich of Louisville was named to the second team, while Cincinnati outfielder Lance Durham joins Gyorko on the third team.
Previous Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA All-America teams from 1996-2008 have featured the likes of outfielder J.D. Drew of Florida State, pitcher/designated hitter Jason Jennings of Baylor, first baseman Mark Teixeira of Georgia Tech, right-handed pitcher Mark Prior of Southern California, shortstop Khalil Greene of Clemson, shortstop/second baseman Rickie Weeks of Southern and pitcher David Price of Vanderbilt, among others.
Pro-Line Athletic is in its fifth year as a sponsor of the NCBWA. It produces and distributes plaques for national hitter and pitchers of the week during the regular season and extends its award production to include plaques for each member of the Pro-Line/NCBWA All-America team.
