Baseball: Gyorko Earns Postseason Honor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Shortstop Jedd Gyorko of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named a Second Team Louisville Slugger All-American, announced today by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Gyorko, a Morgantown native, becomes the first Mountaineer to earn a postseason honor from Collegiate Baseball since Justin Jenkins was named a Third Team Louisville Slugger All-American in 2007.
The All-BIG EAST First Team performer ranks among the nation’s best shortstops in offensive production. Gyorko batted .421 with eight home runs, 58 RBIs, 28 doubles, 96 base hits and 74 runs scored. He also finished with a .375 average, four home runs and 27 RBIs in 27 BIG EAST games.
A Brooks Wallace Award finalist, Gyorko led a potent WVU offense with 31 multi-hit games, and will enter the 2010 season carrying a 14-game hitting streak. He finished his sophomore campaign going 30-for-56 (.536) in the month of May, raising his average from .392 on May 1 to his season-ending mark of .421.
Gyorko recorded a .947 fielding percentage in his first collegiate year at shortstop, highlighted by a 19-game errorless streak from March 11-April 18.
Five BIG EAST players, including Gyorko, were honored on the first, second and third teams. Pitt second baseman Chris Sedon and Louisville third baseman Chris Dominguez earned spots on the first team, while Louisville pitcher Justin Marks joins Gyorko on the second team. St. John’s first baseman Tim Morris rounds out the conference accolades as a member of the third team.
San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg earned the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year.
