MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior centerfielder Austin Markel of the West Virginia University baseball team was named to the 2009 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team following Sunday’s championship contest between UConn and Louisville.
The Elizabethville, Pa., native earns his second straight bid to the All-Tournament Team after claiming the honor in 2008. Over three games, Markel went 6-for-14 with two home runs, seven RBIs, two triples and five runs scored. His 4-for-5 performance with six RBIs against Pitt in game two last Thursday was a single-game championship record for the most runs driven in.
During the same contest, Markel’s two triples gave him the all-time record at WVU with 17, breaking former Mountaineer Tyler Kuhn’s mark of 16 from 2005-08.
The All-BIG EAST Third Team player finishes his senior year batting .357 with a team-leading 15 home runs, 56 RBIs, seven triples, 74 base hits and 75 runs scored. Markel also did not commit an error all season in 52 games played at center field.
