Track: WVU Concludes Day One at Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Marie-Louise Asselin finished second in the 10,000-meter event with a time of 34:14.54, today at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Jumbo Elliot Track on the campus of Villanova in Philadelphia, Pa.
“We had some really great runs today,” comments Coach Sean Cleary. “It was nice to see Marie-Louise back after not competing in the indoor season. I was pleased with the team’s effort and we are looking forward to tomorrow’s competition.”
Asselin’s time was not only an NCAA qualifier but is also the second-best time in WVU school history, trailing only teammate Clara Grandt who set the bar at 33:16.96 on March 28.
The Mountaineers are currently tied for seventh-place with 13 points, along with Providence and Pitt. Louisville leads the pack with 79 points followed by Notre Dame (54) and Cincinnati (34).
Senior Alison Spiker placed 11th in the 3000-meter steeple chase with a time of 11:00.2, while sophomore Kate Harrison took 18th place, crossing the finish line at 11:15.1
Alex Acker placed fourth in the pole vault event after clearing 3.85-meters, while Kristen Loughry finished ninth (3.50-meters).
In the preliminary events, sophomore Chelsea Carrier ran a personal best 13.33 in the 100-meter hurdles, while freshman Jessica O’Connell posted an NCAA regional qualifying time of 4:26.13 in the 1500-meter where she placed seventh.
Karly Hamric finished eighth in the 800-meter event, while April Rotilio took third in the 400-meter race with times of 2:20.13, and 54.30, respectively. Both times were NCAA regional qualifying times.
