MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team will compete in a pair of meets this weekend. Seven athletes will compete in the Robert Morris Bennie Benson Invitational in Moon Township, Pa., on April 11, while the rest of the team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Sea Ray Relays hosted by Tennessee on April 9-11.
Javelin thrower Rachel Goodman will look to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships at the RMU Invitational along with a handful of distance runners.
The rest of the team will compete in the Sea Ray Relays at the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. This year's meet will feature 1,270 athletes from 90 different affiliations, representing small colleges, universities and track clubs from coast to coast. A total of 642 women and 628 men are slated to take part in the four-day affair.
Among the women’s teams competing are No. 2-ranked Virginia Tech and No. 24 Louisville. Third-ranked Oregon and No. 17 South Carolina will have individual athletes competing. Other teams include BIG EAST foes UConn, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Villanova. Other highlighted schools competing are San Diego State, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio State and Middle Tennessee.
“Sea Ray is one of the premier meets in the country,” comments Coach Sean Cleary. “Going to Tennessee allows us the opportunity to see some of the nation’s very best. The philosophy with our season has our athletes competing against a higher level of competition from week to week. It is important that we continue to improve as the competition becomes more competitive. We must take advantage of the opportunities before us to fine tune both the mental and technical aspects of our sport.”
