MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Alexandra Acker placed second in the pole vault event, after she cleared a NCAA regional qualifying mark of 3.85-meters, as the West Virginia University track and field team completed day one of the Duke/asics Invitational, held at Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
“It was a nice day today,” commented Coach Sean Cleary. “Alex really got the team rolling for the weekend with her performance. To come out and hit the regional qualifier in her first outdoor meet of the season really serves as a spring board for a great day tomorrow.”
With the mark, Acker now joins Ahna Lewis, Clara Grandt and Karly Hamric as a qualifier at the NCAA Regional meet, who all posted qualifying marks last weekend. Acker’s mark ties her personal-best, which she set at the 2009 BIG EAST Indoor Championship on Feb. 21.
Freshman Lindsay Kopenhaver finished 12th after topping 3.30-meters in her West Virginia track debut. Duke’s Amy Fryt won the event, topping 3.95-meters.
Brooke Boening took second place with a time of 17:38.56 in the 5000-meter section ‘B’ event, while Roshawna Mongold placed 13th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.97). Both performances were personal-bests.
Tomorrow’s schedule begins at 9 a.m. with both field and running events. Live stats, standings and heat sheets will be available at goduke.com, with a full recap on MSNsportsNET.com following the conclusion of the day’s events.
