MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University baseball players Chris Enourato and Tobias Streich were named to their respective watch lists for their mid-season efforts.
Enourato was one of 45 relief pitchers named to the midseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award. The award is given to the top reliever in NCAA Division I college baseball.
WVU’s all-time career saves leader is one of two BIG EAST pitchers named to the prestigious list, joining Cincinnati’s Jake Geglein. Enourato is tied for first in the conference in both saves (6) and wins (5). In 31.1 innings pitched, the Bridgeport, W.Va., native is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST with 45 strikeouts.
Enourato is holding batters to a .189 opposing average, and has made 13 appearances so far in his junior season.
The watch list was compiled from nominations submitted by sports information contacts and conference media relations offices nationwide. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 3, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional play.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced Saturday, June 13, before the opening of NCAA College World Series.
Streich, a sophomore from Johnsonburg, Pa., is one of 47 players named to the watch list for the 2009 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, given to the top catcher in NCAA Division I college baseball. Streich is hitting .341 with six home runs, 46 RBIs and 10 doubles in 33 games started in 2009.
Streich is one of three catchers from the BIG EAST to make the watch list, joining Louisville’s Jeff Arnold and Dan Benedetti of St. John’s. His 46 RBIs rank second in the BIG EAST, while his 11 sacrifice bunts rank first in the conference.
The watch list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists, whom will be announced May 14, 2009. Statistics will be compiled on each of the semifinalists and sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 3, 2009 prior to the NCAA Super Regionals and Major League Baseball Draft.
