MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Tobias Streich, Joe Agreste and Dan DiBartolomeo drove in four runs each to lead West Virginia to a 19-0, seven-inning victory over New Jersey Tech in game one of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Hawley Field.
West Virginia (4-3) pounded out 16 hits against two Highlander pitchers. Vince Belnome went 4 for 5 with four runs scored and three RBI, Jedd Gyroko went 3 for 4 with four runs scored and two RBI and the Mountaineers got a grand slam from DiBartolomeo in producing their most runs of the year.
The Mountaineers have scored 10 or more runs in five of seven games so far this Jarryd Summers went the distance for West Virginia on the mound, pitching a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to improve to 2-0.
Matt Melody was tagged for 11 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work to take the loss for the Highlanders.
Saturday’s game was the season opener for New Jersey Tech.
