MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University distance medley relay (DMR) team took first place with a WVU record time of 11:05.12 today, at Notre Dame’s Alex Wilson Invitational, held at the Loftus Sport Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
“The DMR team has been the staple of the West Virginia track program over the last decade,” commented Coach Sean Cleary. “For these four ladies, who come from 50 miles away from West Virginia’s campus, this feat is astonishing. I am privileged to coach them and it has been a wonderful ride.”
The previous record of 11:07.64 was set by April Rotilio, Karly Hamric, Marie-Louise Asselin and Keri Bland in 2008.
The DMR team of Rotilio, Kaylyn Christopher, Hamric and Bland ran the record breaking time, also an NCAA qualifier, which now ranks the Mountaineer’s 5th on the NCAA descending list in the event.
The DMR team has now qualified for the NCAA Championships nine times out of the last 11 years.
“That feat shows the depth of the middle distance program here at WVU,” commented Cleary.
Chelsea Carrier was also a highlight of today’s meet as she placed third in the long jump with a career-best 5.82-meter leap. Carrier’s performance was the first time that the sophomore has cleared 19 feet in the event.
Day two of the Alex Wilson Invitational is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s and women’s triple jump, while the running events will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdle event. A full recap will be available on MSNsportsNET.com following the conclusion of the day’s events.
