Grandt will run the 6,000-meter course at 10:30 a.m. and will compete with three other Team USA women in the senior group. More than 170 athletes representing 16 national federations will compete at the fifth annual championship race.
"I am very proud of all that Clara has accomplished over the last few years both on and off the track,” comments Coach Sean Cleary. “Representing your country is the highest honor for any athlete in any sport. We should all be very proud of the hard work and sacrifice that has gone into this performance."
Grandt finished in eighth place with a time of 28:22, at the United States World Cross Country Trials in Derwood, Md., on Feb. 7. Her finish placed her in the pool of athletes who could be selected to represent Team USA at the NACAC Championships as well as at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships March 28, in Amman, Jordan.
This is the fifth WVU-affiliated athlete to compete in this championship over the past four years. Grandt joins fellow teammates Marie-Louise Asselin who competed for Canada and Team USA in 2007 while garnering second and fourth place. The 2006 season saw Megan Metcalfe win the gold medal in the Senior Championships, while Rebecca Stallwood competed in the race in both 2005 and 2007.
