MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior gymnast Mehgan Morris has been named the EAGL Co-Gymnast of the Week. It is the third honor for the Mountaineer captain.
A Belle, W.Va., native, Morris receives the award following a career-best meet in No. 20 WVU’s 195.425-194.650 victory over Kentucky on March 1.
Morris scored a career-high 39.475 points, her third straight 39.000-plus score of the season, and finished first in the all-around. The point total, which ranks ninth on the program-best list, tops her previous career-best mark by 0.475 points.
Through 47 career meets, Morris totals 1,427.825 points and ranks No. 16 on the WVU career point list.
Morris finished first on the bars with a season-high 9.875, first on the beam with a career-high 9.850 and first on the floor, matching a season- and career-high with 9.950 points. Additionally, Morris finished third on the vault, scoring 9.800 points and matching a career-high set Feb. 20 at Oklahoma.
Morris last earned the EAGL’s top weekly honor on Feb. 17, and was also the first honoree of the 2009 season on Jan. 12.
This is the fifth conference award this season for the Mountaineers. Sophomore Amy Bieski was previously named EAGL Specialist of the Week on Jan. 19, and EAGL Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 26. NC State leads all conference teams with eight season awards.
The Mountaineers (8-6 overall, 4-1 EAGL) welcome No. 19 Penn State on Sunday, March 8, at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. The meet closes out the squad’s home season and will honor the team’s three seniors – Morris, Heather Izer and Erica Watson.
