MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia University track and field team finished their stay at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., this afternoon, while the majority of the team stayed in West Virginia and competed in the WJU Bill Van Horne Invitational hosted by Wheeling Jesuit.
At the Stanford Invitational, junior Karly Hamric competed in the second section of 800-meter race. Hamric finished in third place with a lifetime best time of 2:09.27. With the time, the Bruceton Mills, W.Va., native qualified for the BIG EAST Championships, ECAC Championships and NCAA Regional Championships.
“Realistically, for her to come out after a long winter and come outdoors and get a lifetime best, that is as much as we could have asked for,” Coach Sean Cleary said.
In the WJU Bill Van Horne Invitational, WVU took home first-place finishes in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races. The Mountaineers also won the 4x100 and 4x400-relays, along with the long jump and high jump.
“It was a low-key introduction to the spring for the girls,” Cleary said. “We’re tuning up for the Duke Invitational and it’s a nice stepping stone for us to go to Duke.”
Junior April Rotilio won the 200-meter race in a time of 24.96. With that time the Bellaire, Ohio, native qualified for the BIG EAST Championships. Senior Brittany Hohn and sophomore Jordann Mitchell also placed first in the 100 and 400-meter races, respectively.
Freshman Meghan Mock took the long jump title, while sophomore Katelyn Williams and junior Natasha Redman shared first place in the high jump.
In the 4x100-relay, a team made up of Hohn, Rotilio, sophomore Chelsea Carrier and freshman Kyllie Bebout finished in first place with a time of 47.01.
The 4x400-relay team featuring Carrier, Rotilio, Mitchell and senior Roshawna Mongold also crossed the line in first place with a time of 3:50.00.
The team will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the aforementioned Duke Invitational. The invitational will be a two day event from April 3-4.
