MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Michael Walker of the West Virginia men’s swimming and diving team finished his WVU career today in the final day of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas.
The Bridgeport, W.Va., native swam to what was thought to be an 18th-place finish in the preliminary round of the 200 breast with a time of 1:55.72. However, after the race Walker was disqualified due to a faulty first turn.
“Michael had a good swim this morning. Unfortunately, the fact he was disqualified for a call off the first turn is not the way we wanted to end the meet,” Coach Vic Riggs said. “However, he swam right at his best time and overall had a great meet.”
Last night, Walker earned the status of being an Honorable Mention All-American with his 11th-place finish in the 400 IM. During this meet, Walker has set new school records in both the 200 IM and 400 IM. This is the first trip Walker has made to the championships.
“Michael has represented the program very well and it will be hard to replace a true Mountaineer like him,” Riggs said. “I am glad he was able to finish his collegiate career at this meet.”
Heading into the final night of competition, the Mountaineers are in 32nd place with six points. This event ends the season for West Virginia swimming and diving. The men finished with a record of 4-10 and finished in fourth place at the 2009 BIG EAST Championships. The women finished the season 3-12 and a fifth-place finish at the 2009 BIG EAST Championships.
