MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team registered a pair of wins against Southeastern Conference (SEC) teams Saturday morning at Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. The Mountaineers defeated host Tennessee, 2-0, and Georgia, 1-0, in a pair of 60-minute matches.
“It’s always nice to win but we really got a lot out of playing two good SEC teams today,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We have a lot of respect for what Tennessee and Georgia do and the type of style they play. The spring season is about getting better as individuals and as a team, and the matches this morning will make us stronger come fall.”
In a morning match with the Volunteers, Blake Miller put WVU on the board with a goal in the 16th minute on a ball from Megan Mischler. Mischler served a ball into the middle where Miller one-timed the ball into the back of the net.
The Mountaineers added a second half goal in the 57th minute on a long shot from Mischler. Kristen Felice played a ball to Mischler, who beat two defenders and scored far post from 20 yards out.
Goalkeeper Kerri Butler earned a shutout in goal with the help of Carolyn Blank, Nicole Mailloux and Heather Saffel anchoring a solid defense.
In its second match of the day, West Virginia scored early to upend the Georgia Bulldogs, 1-0. Mischler found the back of the net on a 1v1 with the goalkeeper just 1:33 into the contest on a through ball from Miller.
Mallory Beck was near perfect in game two between the posts to earn the shutout. The Mountaineers also received strong play from Saffel midfielder Meghan Lewis.
WVU resumes spring action when conference foe Pitt comes to town for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational on April 4 at 11 a.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
