Tennis: WVU Finishes Weekend at Southern Miss

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team closed out the weekend with a 6-1 loss to Southern Miss on Saturday, March 21, and a 5-2 loss to Lamar this afternoon at the Tennis Center in Hattiesburg, Miss.
In today’s match, the Mountaineers posted a tough effort with wins at the No. 5 and 6 single spots. Sophomore Ashley Pilsbury recorded her second-straight win of the weekend as she defeated Manami Kruoda 6-4, 6-5 at the No. 5 spot, while junior Monique Burton took down Salina Aranda 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles play, Burton and junior Stephanie LaFortune posted a good match with a 9-7 win over Manijee Ashrafi and Salina Aranda at the No. 2 spot, for their third-straight win on the weekend.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers played hard against Golden Eagles with two matches being decided in a third set tiebreaker. Pilsbury captured the only win as she defeated Shannon Rogers 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Freshman Kathryn Haught put up a good effort in her first match at the No. 1 spot, as she fell to Elja van Berlo, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, while freshman Veronica Cardenas fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Hollie Robinson.
In doubles play, Burton and LaFortune captured the lone win as they defeated Robinson and Rogers 8-2.
“Monique and Stephanie played really well all weekend in doubles play,” Coach Marc Walters said. “This weekend was good for us. I think it toughened us up a little bit to get us ready for our upcoming conference matches.”
The Mountaineers are set to return to BIG EAST play with a 4 p.m. match against Georgetown on Tuesday, March 31.
