Notre Dame got 14 points and 11 rebounds from Lindsay Schrader to defeat shorthanded West Virginia 72-66 Monday afternoon at the Joyce Center in South Bend, Ind.
West Virginia was down to just seven players because starting point guard Ashley Powell was ill and unable to play.
Despite that, the Mountaineers were able to close to within four, 70-66, with 44 seconds remaining on a basket by Sarah Miles.
West Virginia held No. 22-ranked Notre Dame to just 40.6 percent shooting for the game. The Irish were also 14 of 24 from the free throw line.
Takisha Granberry led the Mountaineers with a game-high 21 points. The forward was 5 of 9 from 3-point range and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Liz Repella scored 13 points and hauled down nine boards, while Miles scored 12 points and had seven rebounds. Freshman Natalie Burton had her second consecutive double-figure scoring game with 10 points.
Five different players scored double figures for Notre Dame, now 21-7, 10-6.
West Virginia was already locked into the 11th spot in the Big East standings regardless of today’s outcome. The Mountaineers finish the regular season with a 16-13 overall record and a 5-11 mark in Big East play.
WVU will play the 8 pm game in the opening round of the Big East Tournament Friday night in Hartford. Tournament pairings will be announced by the conference later this week.
