MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Liz Repella’s game-best 27 points and 10 rebounds led four Mountaineers in double figures as the West Virginia University women’s basketball team posted a 70-40 victory over Coppin State in first round action of the postseason Women’s NIT Thursday evening at the WVU Coliseum.
Repella, a sophomore guard from Steubenville, Ohio, connected on a career-best six 3-pointers for her ninth 20-point effort on the year and her 12th double-double of the season.
Senior point Ashley Powell, a Detroit native, added 14 points on 6-11 shooting with six assists and Sarah Miles and Takisha Granberry had 10 points a piece for WVU. Granberry also had nine rebounds while Miles tallied five caroms and five assists.
WVU raced out to a 17-2 lead six minutes into the contest and never looked back in improving its all-time record against Coppin State to a perfect 5-0. WVU out-rebounded the Eagles 47-38 and scored 20 points off of 21 Coppin State turnovers. WVU’s defense smothered CSU and held it to just 28.8% shooting from the field (17-59). WVU shot 41.5% for the game including 15-31 in the first half.
Whitney Cunningham scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for Coppin State in the losing effort.
The victory marked WVU Coach Mike Carey’s 150th as the Mountaineer front man. The win was also WVU’s sixth WNIT victory in program history and marked the third consecutive season West Virginia has tallied at least one victory in postseason play.
WVU is now 42-3 all-time in non-conference play under Carey at the WVU Coliseum. For the season, Repella and Granberry are now just the second set of teammates in WVU history, and first since 1981, to each tally 500 or more points in a season (Repella/528; Granberry/508).
West Virginia now takes on St. Bonaventure in second round WNIT action, in Olean, N.Y., at 1 p.m., on Saturday.
