Tennis: Mountaineers Top New Orleans

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University (7-11, 2-2 BIG EAST) tennis team defeated New Orleans, 6-1, this evening at the University Tennis Center in New Orleans, La.
The Mountaineers dominated throughout the day taking five out of six singles matches. Freshman Kathryn Haught played well for the Mountaineers as she defeated Kozue Matsumoto in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, at the No. 2 spot.
Junior Olga Elkin also came out on top in a second-set tiebreaker with a 6-3, 7-6 (19-17) score over Ceara Howey at the No. 3 spot, while freshman Veronica Cardenas defeated Amber Garza 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.
Junior Monique Burton and sophomore Ashley Pilsbury also captured wins today, as Burton defeated Pia Dozo-Moreno 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot and Pilsbury claimed a victory over Anita Racz 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot.
The Mountaineers also took the doubles point as junior Stephanie LaFortune and Burton defeated Howey and Sofija Karalic, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot and Elkin and Cardenas posted a 8-1 victory over Dozo-Moreno and Garza at the No. 3 spot. The No. 1 doubles team of Pilsbury and Gabriela Blaskovicova also posted a tough match as they fell to Escobar and Matsumoto 8-7 (7-5).
The Mountaineers are set to return to action with a three-match weekend at Southern Miss. On Friday, March 20, WVU is set to face Troy in a 2 p.m. match, followed by a 2 p.m. match against Southern Miss on Saturday, March 21, and a 9 a.m. match against Troy on Sunday, March 22.
